I’ll be honest—when it comes to features and overall maturity, Fanbox is a more established platform than UniFans. With 7 years of development behind it, Fanbox offers a polished experience, while UniFans is still a 1 year old startup, continuing to grow and improve. However, there are some fundamental differences between the two platforms that go beyond age and features.
One key distinction is where each platform is based, which directly shapes their approach to content regulation. Fanbox operates out of Japan, where the rules around creative content—especially stylized or chibi-like characters—can be more lenient. On the other hand, UniFans is based in Canada, where we are committed to upholding stricter guidelines around sensitive content areas, particularly when it comes to depictions of minors and bestiality. These differences in legal environments and cultural standards lead to very different policies and experiences for creators, especially those working with adult content.
In this article, I’ll break down some of the major differences between Fanbox and UniFans to help creators better understand which platform may suit your needs.
Pricing, Currency, and Payment Flexibility
One of the key differences between Fanbox and UniFans lies in their approach to pricing and currency. Fanbox sets prices in Japanese Yen, meaning the amount fans pay in US Dollars can fluctuate month to month depending on exchange rates. Some users may also encounter extra fees from their banks for currency conversion. In contrast, UniFans prices are set in US Dollars, offering stable and predictable pricing for both creators and fans. UniFans also supports a wider range of payment methods, including PayPal, credit cards, and cryptocurrency, giving fans more flexibility compared to Fanbox's payment method, which only accepts PayPal and cards.
Like many other platforms, Fanbox charges a flat 10% platform fee for all users. In contrast, UniFans uses a genre-based fee structure based on the account tag and the type of content being monetized. For example, novelists are charged 6%, while podcasters are charged 8%. Overall, UniFans' platform fees range from approximately 6% to 10%. Click here to learn more about our platform fees.
Subscription Models and User Control
Fanbox operates on a strict monthly subscription model where fans commit to recurring payments. If a fan forgets to cancel, they risk being charged for the next month automatically. One unique feature that Fanbox provides that UniFans doesn't is donation feature where creator is charged less in fees or taxes.
UniFans takes a different approach by using a “coin” system, where fans purchase coins and spend them as they wish—whether on monthly plans. We also have more types of monetization methods beyond just tier-based subscriptions; we have project-based subscription, individual pay-what-you-want posts, or creator-offered promo codes and free trials where creators can customize discount levels. This model eliminates the worry of unwanted recurring charges and gives fans more control over how and when they support creators.
NSFW Policy and Content Freedom
When it comes to adult content, the two platforms take very different stances. Fanbox has strict rules against linking to sites that host uncensored NSFW material, forcing creators to hide links or risk bans that could cut off their income entirely. UniFans, on the other hand, was designed with adult creators in mind and allows uncensored materials. As long as the content is legal and properly marked as NSFW or behind paywalls—including direct video uploads from PC—are fully supported. This gives creators far more freedom and peace of mind when sharing their work.
Creator Fees and Platform Culture
Another major difference is the platform fee structure. Fanbox takes a 10% platform fee from creators, while UniFans has a flexible model where the starting platform fee is 5%, allowing creators to keep a larger share of their earnings. Beyond fees, the general culture of each platform also plays a role. Fanbox has been criticized for unpredictable bans and strict enforcement that many creators feel lacks transparency. UniFans takes a similar approach; however, as long as you follow our content guideline, our support team remains open and approachable through Discord or directly within in-app support.
