Pixiv's recent actions have caught the attention of its user community as Pixiv is deleting R-18 illustrations and banning R-18 creators in what seems to be a significant crackdown. The scale of the deletions is notable, with approximately one of ten R-18 tagged material vanishing from Pixiv in just a few weeks, reducing the total count from over 10 million posts to a little over 9 million.

What is banned in Pixiv?

What makes these deletions intriguing is that they are not the result of new rules or guidelines introduced by Pixiv. Instead, the controversy revolves around the enforcement of a guideline introduced in May 2023. Specifically, users who had their accounts terminated reported that the reason was related to their violation of a guideline concerning photo-realistic works that could be "interpreted" as sexual content.

According to Pixiv official guideline, which last update is on December 25, 2023, it does include provisions related to content that can be interpreted as sexual content, especially in the section titled "Illustrations, Manga, Ugoira, and Other Images." This section prohibits real-life photographs or photo-realistic images that can be interpreted as sexual content. However, it does not specifically mention R-18 content or the enforcement of such content.

Why is Pixiv banning R18?

There are mainly two reasons: payment companies restrict transactions for adult content and certain countries are restricted to display adult content. Let's first study the first problem because it affects all platforms, including Patreon and Ko-fi etc. The issue revolves around the rejection of payments by credit card companies like VISA Card, Mastercard, and JCB Card Since summer 2018, companies, including manga and adult content publishers, have been refusing payments for products with problematic sexual or violent content, causing issues for businesses like DVD sales companies in Ikebukuro and Nakano. The rejections have been particularly frequent in industries like adult content, where the DMM Group, which includes FANZA, ceased transactions with Mastercard following payment refusals.

This trend intensified around 2020, with credit card companies increasingly scrutinizing content and rejecting payments for items they deemed inappropriate, including certain adult content and extreme expressions. This led to businesses adopting measures like cancelling sales of certain products or shifting to cash payments.

The situation escalated when it became evident that commonly accepted expressions in adult video and doujinshi circles were being prohibited, and terms like "murder case" and "schoolgirl rape" triggered automatic payment bans. The impact was so significant that the DMM Group withdrew from transactions with Mastercard entirely after being threatened with payment refusal for their entire business.

In the case of pixiv, a major illustration service site, the issue was compounded by the fact that their search results could lead to illegal sales sites, including real child pornography and images of real corpses. The credit card companies' strict stance on adult content distribution raised fears that other card companies might follow Mastercard's lead, potentially affecting not just individual products but entire businesses or capital groups. This has led to calls for action from politicians and competent authorities to protect the interests and cultural expressions of creators and businesses in Japan. However, this does not protect foreign creators and fans who use Pixiv. Thus, fans who use credit cards and Stripe to support creators who makes loli,  photo-realistic and 3D artwork are being targeted on Pixiv.

Pixiv announced new measures to restrict the display of works that may be deemed inappropriate in specific countries or regions, effective from December 26th. This decision is aimed at preventing violations of local laws and regulations in different countries and regions, although the specific areas subject to these restrictions have not been disclosed. The announcement about these changes was made in Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese.

In line with these measures, pixiv has introduced a "viewing region setting" feature in user settings. This setting, which determines the display of content based on the user's location, is initially set automatically based on access information but can be manually changed. Users can adjust their viewing region from both desktop and mobile versions of the site. On the desktop version, this is done by accessing the settings page while logged in and selecting a new "Country/Region" from a dropdown menu. Similarly, on the mobile version, users can change their "Country/Region" in the "Language and Region Settings" dropdown on the settings page. However, it's important to note that these changes cannot be made from the app version of pixiv.

Solution?

Not sure where to share your R18 creatives? I have made a list of NFSW friendly platforms, where you can share your work, including streaming, images, novel, games and 3D models. Unfortunately, all platforms do have to rely on PayPal and Stripe for transaction nowadays and all of them do forbid certain sexually oriented material or services. Therefore, for the case of Japan's unique cultural preferences, such as school girl, minor, loli or beastiality, they will never be accepted by Western multinational payment corporations. However, there are a few outliers that accept such content, for example, www.iwara.tv and

At Unifans, we acknowledge the importance of adult content in creative expression. To maintain a respectful and safe platform, explicit nudity and strongly suggestive sexual themes must be restricted in Feeds and public spaces. Mature-themed content is acceptable and accessible only to paying members. Should we identify any issues with your account, we will personally notify you via email.
